OpenStreetMap is a free, editable map of the whole world. OpenStreetMap volunteers have been helping many humanitarian organizations in providing comprehensive and updated geographic data for disaster risk reduction and response. For more information about OpenStreetMap's mapping response during Typhoon Yolanda/Haiyan, check out this wiki and video.

Editing data in OpenStreetMap

Mapping in OpenStreetMap is as easy as these 3 steps.

  1. Set up an account and get a log in from OpenStreetMap.
  2. Learn to map. Watch this video and follow the instructions.

  3. Introduction to editing in OpenStreetMap by http://mapgive.state.gov.
  4. Start mapping!

No time to edit the map? Use the OpenStreetMap Notes

OpenStreetMap Notes allows you to easily add a marker for errors or missing information in the map data.

  1. To add a note, click the bottom tool bar button on the right side of the main OSM map.
  2. Leave a short message on the map if something is missing or obviously wrong.
  3. An experienced mapper can use these Notes as reference to edit the map.

Map your "neighborhood"

Guagua OSM-PH Mapping During a disaster risk reduction OSM training held in Guagua (Pampanga, Philippines) the participants were divided into groups and did a field survey in various parts of the town. Is your neighborhood already in OpenStreetMap? Let's start with a place you know and improve OSM.

  1. Browse the map to check if your neighborhood is already in OpenStreetMap. Hint: use the Search box on the right corner of the map.
  2. Click the Edit button and use the edit with iD (in-browser editor).
  3. Add as much detail within your neighborhood such as amenities, buildings, roads and other structures.
  4. When saving your edits, include this comment to your changeset #iwlearn.
